“Lord, teach us to pray.” The disciples asked for one thing when they watched Jesus pray — and their request is still the deepest need of the church. This is a school of prayer, and its faculty is unexpected: four figures from Genesis, each holding one lesson the others cannot teach.
Abraham gives us the altar — where prayer stands. Hagar gives us the well — who carries prayer. Isaac gives us the waiting, and the cost of the prayer not prayed. And Jacob gives us the face: prayer born at Bethel, dying at Harran under twenty prayerless years, and raised at Peniel at the cost of a wounded hip and a name.
